Rejoinder to Murphy and Callahan on Hoppe’s Argumentation Ethics

چکیده
ALTHOUGH I SHALL HAVE highly critical things to say about Murphy and Callahan (2006), I am delighted they have written it, and very happy that the refereeing system organized by the editor of The Journal of Libertarian Studies, Roderick Long, saw fit to accept it for publication. And this for two reasons. First, a minor one: there are those who accuse libertarianism of being a cult. A necessary (but not sufficient) condition for such a status is that all members be in thrall to the eminent leader. Well, Murphy and Callahan (hence, MC) are certainly members in good standing of the libertarian community. With the passing of Murray N. Rothbard, Hoppe has as good a claim as anyone, and a much better one than many, to being the new leader of the libertarian movement, at least insofar as being its most eminent and accomplished

Hans-hermann Hoppe’s Argumentation Ethic: a Critique
ONE OF THE MOST prominent theorists of anarcho-capitalism is HansHermann Hoppe. In what is perhaps his most famous result, the argumentation ethic for libertarianism, he purports to establish an a priori defense of the justice of a social order based exclusively on private property. Hoppe claims that all participants in a debate must presuppose the libertarian principle that every person owns h...
متن کاملTowards the Generation of Rebuttals in a Bayesian Argumentation System
We describe a mechanism which generates rebuttals to a user's rejoinders in the context of arguments generated from Bayesian networks. This mechanism is implemented in an interactive argumentation system. Given an argument generated by the system and an interpretation of a user's rejoinder, the generation of the rebuttal takes into account the intended effect of the user's rejoinder, determined...
متن کاملRejoinder to Block ’ S Defense of Evictionism
I AM THANKFUL TO WALTER BLOCK (2010) for his comprehensive and perspicacious engagement with my critical remarks regarding his theory of evictionism (Wisniewski 2010). I also appreciate his kind words about what he sees as the merits and strong points of my argumentation. However, as one could easily surmise from my decision to write this rejoinder, I found his defense of evictionism unconvinci...
متن کاملRecognizing Intentions from Rejoinders in a Bayesian Interactive Argumentation System
We describe a mechanism which recognizes a user’s intentions from short-form rejoinders to arguments generated from Bayesian networks. The mechanism builds candidate reasoning paths that link the user’s rejoinder with a previously presented argument, and considers the following factors to select a path: linguistic clues, the impact of the user’s rejoinder on the system’s argument along the diff...
